Milk cost $1.44 a gallon. Gas was $0.65 a gallon. (Yes, friends, that is sixty five cents a gallon!!!) A postage stamp cost 15 cents.
Thirty years later, milk is about $3.28 a gallon. Gas, depending on the day is around $3.55 a gallon, and a postage stamp is 41 cents.
An average new car cost about $6000. Now, you have to put a 3 in front of the 6. An average new home cost about $62,500. Now, you have to put another 2 in front of the 6, at least.
On the other hand, the national minimum wage was only $2.65 an hour, and the average yearly income was $20,000.
Being tax day, it makes me wonder what an average person was required to pay in taxes in 1978? My source (d.marie.com) doesn't say...
This is a neat site though. You can put in any date you want and find out little bits of useless information. www.dmarie.com/timecap
